"Giggles" "OATS" Segmented Cherry Burl and Walnut Vase Form 4
1/4 in. x 4 1/4 in. x 6 in. "OATS" is an acronym I came up with to describe the off angle
triangle stave segmented blank I "discovered" in 2004. A very similar variation had been done in England more than
a decade before, but I was totally unaware of that when I began to claim my "original idea." Moving
on, this is my first award winner (2006 Totally Turning - First Place/Segmented) from the first symposium in which I had entered
my work. THAT was a great day and an absolute honor. Turned from cherry burl and black walnut with
maple veneers, this form has become my signature style for this kind of segmenting. It is finished with shellac. After
winning the award, I applied to the Crafts at Rhinebeck art show. You have to provide several images of your work. Giggles
was one that I sent in. They contacted me to see if I would "allow" them to use the image in their billboard advertising.
Of course I agreed. they ended up using the image on pretty much everything, including their customer postcards and the
programs. Needless to say, this one is in our personal collection.
